Jaguar has updated its XJ saloon for the 2014 model year with a range of new luxury features and equipment upgrades.
Although the new XJ looks identical to the existing model on the outside, Jaguar has improved comfort for rear-seat passengers on the inside. Long-wheelbase versions of the XJ now get airline-style reclining seats with a massage function, increased headroom and fold-out business tables. Jaguar has also tweaked the rear suspension to enhance rear-seat ride comfort.
The rear-seat infotainment systems have also been improved, with two high-resolution touchscreens and an improved audio system. More interesting than this, however, is a brilliant new feature called Conversation Assist.
Basically, Conversation Assist utilises microphones above each seat to pick up the voices of the occupants. The signal is then fed into a clever bit of software and played back through the speaker system in the Jag's cabin, making it easier for the passengers to hear what the other occupants are saying above the cabin noise.
In addition to the extra electronic whizz-bangery, the XJ now comes as standard with Intelligent Stop-Start which can restart the engine in less time than it takes for the driver's foot to move from the brake to the accelerator.
The new XJ, like the current model, will be available with a choice of 3.0-litre V6 diesel engines and two 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol units. The 542bhp XJR which was revealed at the New York Motor Show earlier this year tops the range. An eight-speed automatic gearbox with improved ratios will be available across the range.
