The Institute of Advanced Motorists has released some top tips on how to drive more efficiently and reduce your fuel consumption.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists has released a set of top tips for saving fuel and money as part of its weekly advice series from Peter Rodger, Britain's top advanced driver. According to the IAM, green driving can save as much as 15% of your fuel bill.

Top Tips

Keep your car moving as much as possible, even when you are in a traffic jam. This is much more fuel efficient than starting and stopping. To do this you should slow down earlier and avoid braking harshly.

Stay within the speed limit. This provides a good balance between economy and getting where you need to go. There is a substantial saving which can be made just by driving at 70mph rather than 80mph, and you also avoid the potential extra cost of speeding fines.

Reverse into parking spaces rather than reversing out of them. If you do all of the manoeuvring with a warm engine and then drive straight off when you leave, it is more fuel efficient.

Regular vehicle checks can make sure that your car is operating efficiently. Check the tyre pressure when they are cold, and also check the condition of the tyres.

Get rid of any extraneous weight that you are carrying, such as roof racks, clutter, and heavy items in the boot. The heavier your vehicle is, the more fuel it will use.

Make sure that you keep both the front and the rear windscreens as clean as possible. Traffic fumes will form a film on the glass, and this attracts moisture making them mist up easily. Clean glass will rarely mist up, meaning that you do not need to use the heater and air-con to clear it.
