Honda is expanding its Civic range with a new diesel model, which will go on sale at the beginning of next year.

The new Civic 1.6 i-DTEC develops 118bhp and 221lb-ft of torque, while returning 78.5mpg and emitting just 94g/km of CO2. This means that the new Civic qualifies for free road tax under VED band A, and is congestion charge exempt.

The new Civic will be made available in three levels of trim: SE, ES and EX. The specification for these new variants will be identical to the existing 2.2-litre diesel models, but with the addition of new 16-inch alloy wheels.

The top-of-the-range EX comes with DAB digital radio, front and rear parking sensors and an auto-dimming rear view mirror as standard.

Prices for the new Civic 1.6 diesel start from £19,400 for the SE, £20,595 for the ES and £23,175 for the EX.

The first deliveries are expected in January 2013.
