Japanese car maker and one of the pioneers of hybrid car technology, Honda has announced that they have sold more than 800,000 hybrid cars since 1999.

Back in 1999, the Honda Insight was the first hybrid car model to be launched. At the time of launch it delivered an impressive 83 miles per gallon, the highest fuel economy among all petrol powered vehicles at the time.

Today, Honda sells seven hybrid models in 50 countries, selling more than 22,000 hybrids since the original Insight was launched in the country in 2000. Hybrid cars are becoming increasingly popular – in Honda’s home country Japan, more than 45 per cent of all new Honda vehicle registrations for the month of December 2011 were for hybrids.

Honda’s annual worldwide hybrid sales for 2011 was approximately 200,000 units, an impressive 30 per cent increase compared to 2010, and Honda’s total hybrid sales during the last three years exceeded 500,000.

While more than 800,000 hybrids have been sold by Honda since 1999, 500,000 of those sales have come since 2009.

The 2012 5-door Honda Insight has low CO2 emissions of 96g/km and qualifies for exemption from the London Congestion Charge, and additionally falls into the lowest VED band, meaning owners pay no annual road tax.

Honda has also just launched the new 2012 Civic range in the UK with a big advertising campaign and national 30 second TV advert. The 2012 Honda Civic is the ninth incarnation of the successful compact model and prices start from just £16,495 for the entry-level 1.4-litre 98.64BHP i-VTEC SE.

The Civic will also be available in familiar Honda trim levels of SE, ES, EX and EX GT. But not to be outdone on the hybrid front, the car maker has announced that hybrid and natural-gas versions of the car are also set to launch shortly.
