Honda has, rather incongruously, unveiled a hot version of its eco-friendly CR-Z.
If the idea of a performance-based eco-box sounds strange to you, then you’re not alone. However, Honda claims that the Mugen will match the pace of a Civic Type R while, at the same time, matching the eco-credentials of the standard CR-Z.
Northampton based tuners, Mugen Euro have been working their magic strapping a supercharger to the Honda’s standard four-pot 1.5 litre engine and the results speak for themselves. The CR-Z Mugen will hit 60mph after 6.6 seconds and won’t stop accelerating until it hits 200mph.
Mugen have put the CR-Z on a diet, too. 50kg has been lost and the Mugen is fitted with a carbon fibre bonnet which will help keep the weight down as well. Mugen have also fiddled with the suspension and the brakes in the hope that the CR-Z doesn’t disappoint when the road gets twisty.
And the economy? Well, the CR-Z Mugen should return 56mpg if you drive sensibly but that’s likely to drop to 30-something if you’re giving it the beans.
The good news is that if you’ve already got a CR-Z, Mugen will supply the kit to transform it into the car you see here.
The Mugen will debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this summer.
