The government’s THINK! campaign is hoping to encourage World Cup fans to plan for a safe journey home.
Research has suggested that two-thirds of fans watching World Cup matches plan to drink alcohol at the same time but only half of those drinkers have made a plan for getting themselves home. Of course the government is concerned about drink driving and will be looking to punish those guilty of it severely.
The fact that fixtures will be shown late at night in the UK increases the likelihood that people will leave the house to watch games and the first England match was a real test of that theory. They played Italy and the THINK! Campaign urged people to arrange taxis or check bus timetables.
Transport Minister Robert Goodwill said:
"Our message is simple: if you are watching the world cup in the pub or at a friend's house make sure you have a plan to get home afterwards.
"If you drink drive, not only are you putting other road users and pedestrians at risk, the personal consequences could be devastating.
"It won't just be your enjoyment of the World Cup that will be ruined - you'll face a heavy fine, lose your licence and could even go to prison."
During the 2010 World Cup, 7,402 drivers failed a breath test and the government hopes that this statistic will not be repeated during this year’s festivities.
