Sainsbury's has announced that the price of petrol and diesel at its 266 petrol stations will fall by 3 pence today.

This is the latest in a number of price cuts for the UK motorist and has been sparked by a decline in the price of crude oil.

The AA claims that the average price of a litre of petrol is now 138.4p, down from 142.5p in April.

The price cut is likely to fuel a price war between the major supermarket fuel retailers as they try to compete for the lowest price.

Sainsbury's Head of Fuel, Richard Crampton, said: "We know that fuel continues to be a big part of many household budgets and we are committed to helping our customers cut down on cost whenever we can. Wholesale fuel prices have dropped across Europe and we are delighted to pass these savings onto our customers."
