The new VW Golf will feature a more streamlined lower-profile body, improved safety features and more interior space.
In terms of looks, you could be forgiven for mistaking this car for its predecessor. Indeed, the Golf has never changed drastically from generation to generation; each new car looks to be a subtle revision of its predecessor. However, while the same can be said of the new car, it is underneath the bodywork that the most radical changes have been made.
The wheelbase has been lengthened, increasing interior space – the new Golf should have more room, both in the back seats and in the boot, than the MKVI.
Buyers will be well catered for in the engine department; there will be a number of TSI turbo petrol engines ranging from 1.2 to 2.0-litres, plus a normally aspirated 1.4-litre petrol and a brace of turbodiesels. All engines will have eco-friendly stop start technology and – for truly green motoring – a hybrid capable of 100mpg is in the pipeline.
The new Golf will be packed with technology, featuring internet access and a system which provides speed limit information through an ‘eye’ in the front bumper.
We will have to wait a while for the MKVII – indeed the current MKVI has only been with us for two years – however, it will be interesting to see how other manufacturers respond to Volkswagen’s progress.
