The Porsche factory in Leipzig, Germany, had the best year in its history in 2011, producing more than 90,000 vehicles over the year.
The Leipzig Porsche factory produced a total of 93,838 vehicles in 2011 – a boost in production of almost 50% on the previous year.
The factory, in the German state of Saxony, produces two Porsche models – the four-wheel drive Porsche Cayenne and the four-door Panamera Gran Turismo.
Leipzig factory produced 62,004 Cayenne’s and 31,834 Panamera Gran Turismos over the course of 2011, bringing the total factory production to 93,838.
This was an increase of 47% compared to 2010, and factory has said it expects yet more expansion in the coming year.
“We were able to increase production in Leipzig by 47% compared with the year before and are showing an increase also in 2012, following the record performance in 2011,” said Wolfgang Leimgruber, a Member of the Executive Board Production and Logistics of Porsche AG.
“The coming year starts with the task of converting the team to the three-shift operation and adapting our lean logistics system and other business areas to the increased output.”
Porsche estimates that, with the new three-shift operation system, a total of 500 vehicles can come off the production line, to meet the high demand.
The factory is also gearing up to start production of an additional model – the Porsche Cajun, which will start later this year.
“We are expanding the factory to handle production of the Cajun. The outlook is for growth in Leipzig,” said Siegfried Bülow, President and Chief Executive Officer of Porsche Leipzig GmbH.
Porsche is currently developing the Saxony location, and is investing more than €500 million in the region. And more than 1,000 jobs will be created in the region as a result of the factory’s production of the Cajun.
