The Ford Mondeo has been named as the best family car for 2012, as well as winning the best estate car title for the second year running.

The 2012 What Car? Awards, which are judged by a panel of automotive journalists from What Car? magazine, named the Ford Mondeo 1.6 TDCi 113bhp Zetec as the best family car. The best estate car award went to the Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi 138bhp Zetec for the second consecutive year.

The Zetec model which triumphed in both of the above awards accounts for 38% of Mondeo sales in the UK. It comes with a strong list of standard equipment including cruise control, adjustable speed limiter, electronic stability programme with traction control and Emergency Brake Assist, Quick Clear heated windscreen, electrically operated heated door mirrors with integrated turn indicators, Thatcham approved alarm, Bluetooth voice control system, 16 inch alloy wheels, and leather trimmed steering wheel and gear knob.

The 1.6-litre TDCi variant which won the best family car award delivers fuel consumption of 65mpg with CO2 emissions of 114g/km. A turbocharged 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine is also available, which has fuel consumption of 41.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 149g/km, and is capable of reaching a top speed of 134mph.

The Editor in Chief of What Car?, Chas Hallet, said of the double win:

"The Ford Mondeo has plenty of fresh rivals, but it's such a strong package that it picks up two more awards this year, for best estate car and top family car. Ford has worked hard to keep the Mondeo refreshed and it has succeeded; this is still a great all-round package, either as a hatchback or an estate."

Prices for the Ford Mondeo range begin at £17,795 OTR.
