Ford has confirmed up-to-date details of its free Driving Skills for Life programme, aimed at educating new drivers in how to deal with the challenges they might face behind the wheel.
Now in its second year, the programme returns from 18-20 September at Glasgow’s Silverburn Shopping Centre, moving onto the Heritage Motor at Gaydon in Warwickshire from 4-5 October, and then to Chobham in Surrey from 7-9 October.
Some of the themes covered by the training programme include wet-weather driving, managing emergencies, and the dangers of using mobile phones at the wheel after research by Ford found a third of young British drivers have taken a ‘selfie’ while driving. With one in four admitting to using their mobile phone to use social media while at the wheel, training provider the Automobile Association (AA) will be using low-speed manoeuvre exercises in a safe and controlled environment to get across the dangers.
Ford will also provide its specially-developed ‘Drink Driving Suit’ to demonstrate the effects of getting behind the wheel when under the influence of alcohol. The suit consists of weighted pads to restrict movement, headphones to distort hearing, and ‘beer goggles’ to distort sight.
The programme, delivered in partnership with the AA and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, was bought to the UK by Ford last year after operating successfully in the United States for a decade.
The Ford Driving Skills for Life programme is available for those aged 17-24 with a full UK manual driving licence, and registrations for the free training can be submitted online at www.forddsfl.co.uk.
