A new, more efficient version of the Ford Focus 1.0-litre EcoBoost is set to become the first petrol-powered family car in Europe to offer CO2 emissions of less than 100g/km.

The new Focus develops 99bhp from its three-cylinder engine, returns 67.5mpg and emits just 99g/km of CO2.

Ford has achieved these figures by revising the Focus' gear ratios, fitting ultra-low rolling resistance tyres and tweaking the aerodynamics to improve airflow under the car.

The improvements mean that the new Focus will be exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty; however, thanks to the introduction of the new, lower congestion charge cut-off, buyers will still have to pay to drive into London.

Compared to the old first-generation 1.6-litre Ford Focus, the new 1.0-litre model is more powerful and produces 47 per cent less CO2.

The Ford EcoBoost engine won the prestigious International Engine of the Year award in both 2012 and 2013.
