You’ll soon be able to buy a BMW M3 Touring for the first time in the M3’s near 40-year history.

The M3 Touring will be a rival to models such as the Audi RS4 and the new version of the Mercedes-AMG C63 estate that we’re expected to see next year.

To keep up with those cars, the M3 Touring will need to pack some serious firepower – it’ll get the same twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six that is fitted to the saloon, producing circa 500PS.

Meanwhile, pictures of prototype M3 Tourings getting put through their paces in snowy (and slippery) backdrops indicates that the cars will be available with grip-finding all-wheel drive.

You can expect it to be the same system that’s in saloon, with power largely sent to the back wheels to give the M3 rear-wheel drive balance with the security of all-wheel drive when the car senses the extra grip is needed.

Performance will be phenomenal. A 0-62mph of under four seconds is guaranteed and the car will be capable of far beyond the 155mph top speed that it is limited to.

All that’s true of the M3 saloon though, what the Touring model gives you is added practicality. Dog owners rejoice, you’ll no longer have to buy a Mercedes or Audi, the M3 Touring’s boot will be perfect for your prized pooch.

It’ll have a 500-litre capacity, a large opening and a flat floor that will make loading and unloading easy, plus the back seats will disappear into the floor if you need to carry something bigger like a bike.

BMW will cram the load area full of features: there will be hooks for shopping bags and for tying down your luggage, recessed cubbies, a 12V power socket and likely an integrated net to form a barrier between your luggage and your passengers.

You can also expect the M3 Touring to have a splitting tail gate that will make it easy to drop smaller items of shopping by opening the car’s rear windscreen.

Will all this be enough to convince you that your next performance estate should be a BMW? Time will tell, the M3 Touring is expected to be revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on the 23rd of June and will go on sale soon after priced at around £76,000.
