The safety-conscious boffins at Volvo are coming to the conclusion of their four-year Non-Hit Car and Truck project, confident that they have made significant progress towards their stated aim of completely eliminating fatal accidents in new Volvo vehicles by the year 2020.

The latest development in their mission for absolute driver safety is a system which provides a 360 degree view around the vehicle and can search for a collision free escape route in the case of an accident.

Sensors are located discreetly around the car, something which has presented a great challenge to developers up until now. The need for multiple types of sensory equipment including cameras, radar and GPS to share information quickly and accurately led to the building of a centralised sensor fusion framework; this level of information sharing has proved to be a leap forward in the dream of pure safety.

A manoeuvre generator uses this information and can seek a collision free route to take when a threat is perceived. It can also help the driver with auto-braking and steering.

Volvo Cars is definitely on the front line when it comes to innovative active safety research and development. Our primary objective is to focus on preventing different types of accident scenarios. But going forward, we will also continue to work on developing cars that adapt to each individual driver’s unique behaviour,” says Anders Almevad, Project Manager for the Non-Hit Car Project at Volvo Cars.
