Motorists are spending an average of £14.64 more on fuel a month than they were just 12 months ago, according to a survey.

The survey, which was conducted by Sainsbury’s Bank Car Insurance and participated in by 2,007 adults, shows that many people have taken positive steps to improve their fuel efficiency as a result.

42% of drivers said that they were now shopping around to get the best prices for petrol and diesel, while 39% are driving less than they used to and 29% said that they were driving slower.

26% said that they were now performing regular checks to ensure that their tyres were properly inflated, as underinflated ones can impact negatively on fuel economy.

Moreover, 19% have removed unnecessary and heavy items from their boots to reduce weight while 17% have made conscious efforts to not leave the engine running while stationary.

In total nearly three quarters (73%) have moved to combat the quite significant extra expenses, which amount on average to over £175 annually.

Emily Fleming of Sainsbury's Car Insurance said: "Taking small steps, such as making sure you're not carrying around unnecessary items in your car or making sure your tyres are properly inflated, can help to make your fuel go further."
