The Institute of Advanced Motorists has responded to Met Office warnings by appealing for motorists to ensure they are properly prepared for icy conditions.

"We all need to respect that the weather changes and make adjustments to deal with it," said IAM's Chief Examiner Peter Rodger, "Being mentally prepared as well as having the right equipment is vital."

Rodger highlighted a number precautions and tips for motorists to bear in mind if temperatures begin to plunge.

He advised for motorists to ensure they carry a de-icer and scraper with them, and make sure that windscreen visibility is clear with no ice or condensation before setting off on their journey.

In icy conditions, Rodger advises setting off in second gear, releasing the clutch and applying the accelerator gently.

Staying in higher gears where possible will reduce the possibility of wheel spin.

Motorists are advised to maintain a much greater distance between their car and the car in front, as in icy conditions stopping distances can increase up to ten times.

Rodger provided advice for dealing with a skid or loss of grip, telling motorists to take their foot off the accelerator and point the front wheels in the direction they want to go.

Finally, Rodger reminded motorists that the even after frost has gone, bridges and areas shaded by trees and buildings can still contain icy patches.
