Volkswagen have taken the covers off their new Passat range at an unveiling ceremony in Potsdam.
The eighth generation of the Passat which will get its full public debut at October’s Paris Motor Show, but the motoring press were given a privileged preview of both the saloon and estate models last week at the Volkswagen Design Centre.
Lighter than the current Passat, the new model will offer improved fuel economy of up to 20 per cent, and will be offered with a plug-in hybrid version for the first time.
The pictures show an all-new design for the Passat range, which despite featuring slightly reduced exterior dimensions will actually see an increase in passenger cabin space.
The new Passat will have a range of engine options, with Volkswagen billing the 2.0-litre, 237bhp bi-turbo diesel power unit as the highlight. Meanwhile, the plug-in hybrid option has a claimed maximum range of around 600 miles, with a 31 mile range from battery power alone.
Further details and UK pricing are expected to be announced at the time of the Paris Motor Show in October. UK sales will start before the end of the year, with first deliveries expected in early 2015.
