The Chevrolet Volt has been awarded the title of 'Best Eco Car' at the Diesel Car Awards.

Although not a diesel car - the Volt is fitted with a 1.4-litre petrol engine - the title was awarded by Diesel Car's sub-publication Eco Car. The Volt shares its award with the almost identical Vauxhall Ampera.

Ian Roberston, Editor of Diesel Car, said, "Just once in a while, history is made with a new design of car. The Chevrolet Volt and its sister model, the Ampera, have opened up a world of new possibility for electric motoring, extending it to a far wider range of people than the distance limitations of a purely electric car allow."

The Volt is available to buy from £29,995 (after the government's £5,000 electric vehicle grant) and when we tested the even pricier Vauxhall Ampera, we found it difficult to justify the high price.

However, there is no doubt that the Volt has been a huge success, winning the titles of US Car of the Year and European Car of the Year, making it the most awarded car in history.
