A speed camera in Wales has racked up fines of £800,000 in just six months.
GoSafe Wales, a road safety group have released details of the money made by speed traps and it has become clear that the most effective of all is the one located on the junction of Newport Road and Colchester Avenue in Cardiff. Over a period of six months it amassed receipts of £800,000 which looks likely to beat the previous record holder hands down.
Freedom of information requests demonstrated that the M60 near Stockport was the previous record holder, having caught 32,000 drivers over a period of three years. However, its Welsh counterpart could rack up 82,000 fines by 2017 if it continues its current form.
Tim Shallcross, from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), said the whole purpose of speed cameras was to slow cars down.
He commented: "If a camera is issuing a small number of fines, or none at all, it's doing its job. But if this camera in Cardiff is ticketing that many people, it's not having that effect. More than 13,000 is abnormally high number of offences within a six month period.''
Out of the 13,624 people who were caught by the camera, 6,000 chose to take a speed awareness course and more than 3,000 just paid the fine.
