Car owners are quite happy to give up optional extras in favour of better basic features, a report from the AA suggests.

It seems that motorists would not miss heated seats, with over 70% of respondents happy to ditch them. On top of this 70% are not fussed about having an electric parking brake (who is, really?), 66% would give up electric seat adjustment and 56% could do without rain-sensing wipers.

On the other hand, most drivers bemoan having only one rear reversing light, and many miss having a temperature gauge in their instrument binnacle.

Modern cars are, of course, much more luxurious than models from ten, or even five, years ago; but it seems that not all motorists are happy with the increased complexity of new motors.

Andy Smith, AA Patrol of the year, said, "Our members tell us it's gone too far on some models and they want practical over frills. Having two reversing lights makes it easier to reverse down a dim narrow lane, for example, and a temperature gauge can help indicate when the engine is struggling, say when towing or crawling up a hill in heavy traffic."

So, do you think that the creature comforts fitted to modern cars make the driving experience more pleasurable, or are they just unnecessary trinkets destined to go wrong and cost you dear?
