Adding a new set of alloy wheels, a car phone or even a stereo could send your car insurance premiums rising by up to two-thirds, new research has revealed.

According to a study carried out by MoneySupermarket, a male in his thirties can expect to see a 30% increase to his premium for adding alloy wheels to his car, a 50% increase for fitting a car phone, and a 66% increase for fitting a body kit.

The data was collected from quotes received from some of the UK's top insurers, including Admiral, the Post Office and MORE TH>N.

"Motorists need to be aware that even the smallest of modifications can impact the price of car insurance," said Pete Harrison, car insurance expert at MoneySupermarket.

"It pays to contact your insurer before you go ahead and make any modifications, as you will need to decide whether the extra cost to cover the changes is worth paying."
