Drivers in Britain are now spending nearly £8 billion a year to park their cars.

This means that the average motorist spends over £280 per year on parking.

The research from the insurer Confused.com has shown that the cost of parking has increased by 12.5% over the last year.

The most expensive parking spaces are, unsurprisingly, in the capital. NCP Pavilion Road in Knightsbridge is the most expensive place to park your motor, charging £36 for three hours and £18 for two.

Confused.com has also found that three out of five motorists feel that the price of parking is a major consideration when deciding where to park, and two-thirds of drivers claim that the high price of parking puts them off using local shops.

"In today's difficult financial climate, people have had to find ways to save every penny possible," said Confused.com car insurance head Gareth Kloet.

"Over-priced parking charges are a problem that every motorist in the country has to deal with."
