Recent research has shown the level of cash being generated by speed cameras.
One fixed speed camera provided its council with £189,140 in fines over just 12 months; it was flashing someone more than once an hour throughout the year. The offending equipment is located on the M60, junction 25 in Greater Manchester.
Motorists may be annoyed to discover that many fines were due to changes to speed limits. The research found that 8 out of 9 councils made speed limit changes in 2013 and these adaptations led to 15% of all speeding fines.
John O’Roarke, managing director of LV= car insurance, said: 'It can be easy for motorists to become complacent when they get behind the wheel, especially when they drive on the same roads day in and day out.
'However, it's important that drivers always concentrate on the road so they can spot any new road signs, changes in speed limits, and are aware of what other motorists are doing.'
Other highly active speed cameras include one on the A13 Thames Gateway (westbound) to Scratton Terrace in London where 8,002 fines were made and one on the M54 between junction one and three in Staffordshire where 7,403 fines were made.
Taking into account mobile and fixed camera locations, it is estimated that there is one camera for every 67 miles of UK road.
