A leading road safety charity is urging drivers not to succumb to the temptation to drink and drive this summer, as well as renewing calls for the government to introduce more stringent laws against the offence.
With warmer weather approaching - not to mention the football World Cup - Brake are calling on motorists who may be tempted to have a drink to either leave the car at home, or make sure they have agreed on a designated driver to get them home safely from the summer festivities.
The appeal comes at the start of the Association of Chief Police Officers’ month-long campaign to target drink and drug driving, which last year resulted in 5,170 drivers failing a roadside breathalyser test out of 100,892 tested. This figure represents a slight drop on the previous years’ total.
Brake is a national charity promoting road safety awareness, and provides government-funded support to families and victims of road deaths and serious injuries. It is calling for the government to introduce a ‘zero tolerance’ drink drive limit of 20mg alcohol per 100ml of blood. The current limit in the UK is 80mg.
Brake’s deputy chief executive Julie Townsend said, “Drink driving remains one of the biggest killers on our road, yet every year thousands of drivers risk it. That’s why it’s so important that the police are out in force clamping down on this selfish behaviour.”
“We’re calling on the drivers to pledge to never drive after drinking even one drink, and for governments to introduce a zero-tolerance drink drive limit, to help stamp out the deadly menace of drink driving once and for all.”
