BMW has confirmed it will launch an all-new top-of-the-range SUV, called the X7.
The X7 will be the largest SUV ever built by BMW, slotting into the range above the existing X5 (pictured above), when it joins the BMW range in 2018. The X7 will be built at the company's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, USA.
The announcement was made by BMW boss Norbert Reithofer at a ceremony celebrating 20 years of BMW production in the USA.
"With the BMW X7, we are developing another, larger X model, which we will produce at our U.S. plant for our world markets -- once again underscoring our commitment to the U.S.," Reithofer said.
The X7 will share its platform with the next-generation X5 and X6; however, the wheelbase will be significantly lengthened. Inside, the X7 will be a full seven-seater, competing with the likes of the Mercedes GL for interior space.
The X7 will be available exclusively with six-cylinder, V8 and V12 engines, reflecting its premium character; however, the hybrid plug-in system from the X5 will likely be added to the line-up. Unlike the X5 which is available in boggo-spec with rear-wheel drive, all X7s will be four-wheel drive.
BMW has confirmed that the X7 will be available in all of its world markets; however, given its sheer size, it's likely that demand will be strongest in the USA and China.
The announcement of the X7 also lends credence to the suggestion that Rolls-Royce is preparing its own SUV. Just like the Ghost is based on the 7-Series, it would be relatively easy for Rolls-Royce to slot its 6.75-litre petrol engine under the X7's bonnet.
