BMW has released the first official pictures and details of its new four-door M6 Gran Coupe.
The M6 Gran Coupe is essentially a four-door version of the existing M6, which is itself a coupe version of the existing BMW M5. So what BMW appears to have done is release a four-door version of the two-door version of a four-door car. Right...
The similarities with the M5 continue under the bonnet. The new M6 Gran Coupe comes with the same twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 as the M5 and also comes with the same dual-clutch transmission. On the plus side, the Gran Coupe is quicker (marginally) than the M5, hitting 62mph in 4.2 seconds -- a tenth faster than the saloon.
Like the M5, the Gran Coupe is electronically limited to 155mph, but buyers can opt for a special performance package which raises the limit to 189mph and includes some beefier tyres to cope with the higher top speed.
On the outside, the Gran Coupe has been given the de-rigueur M-badge trinketry including an aggressive front spoiler, quad exhausts, a lower ride height and a carbon-fibre roof. Huge 20-inch wheels nestle under flared arches and buyers can also choose to fit carbon ceramic brakes as an optional extra.
The new M6 Gran Coupe is slated for release in 2013, with prices expected to start from £97,460 -- £22,000 more than the current range-topping Gran Coupe and £25,000 more than the M5.
