BMW’s £95,000 hybrid offering has sold out immediately after becoming available in the UK.
The German giant only began to deliver the new i8 two weeks ago but already it has sold out and has even racked up a 10 month waiting list due to enormous demand. It has proved to be massively popular and the BMW showroom on Park Lane in Mayfair, London has taken a whopping 170 orders making it the biggest selling dealer for this model.
The i8 has impressed potential buyers with an array of features unusual to production cars. It makes considerable use of carbon fibre and aluminium in its construction, as well as having autonomous emergency braking and surround-view cameras. The BMW i8 is powered by a combination of a 1.5-litre petrol engine generating 131bhp, and a 7.1kwh battery. As a result it returns an impressive 135mpg and emits only 49g/km of CO2. Its engine is taken directly from the new MINI and tuned to give the power and speed expected of a £95,000 machine.
Apart from its obvious attractions in terms of power and performance, the i8 has also impressed buyers with its green credentials and particularly its ability to avoid the London congestion charge. Apparently people who can afford to buy brand new supercars are surprisingly averse to paying the charge and this has become a determining factor in their purchases.
