The BMW M GmbH development centre has been secretly creating the world’s fastest pickup truck.

BMW have had a huge amount of success with their M3 Coupé, M3 Convertible and M3 Sedan, but now a new fourth body variant will be added to this world renowned high-performance sports car range – an M3 Pickup.

The new pickup truck which will use the drive and suspension technology from the BMW M3 range will be a truly unique vehicle, and by far the most high-performance pick up ever created. Taking the M range’s already well-known combination of race-oriented driving pleasure and everyday use practicality to a whole new level the M3 pickup will combine a power of 420bhp with a 450kg rear-axle load capacity.

Testing of this unique new M3 variant has already been completed successfully on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in Germany where it reached a top speed of over 186mph, and the car is now ready for its global debut today.

With its high-revving V8 engine the new pick up has plenty of pulling power, and with its instantly recognisable M3 design it is also streamlined and aerodynamic. Somewhat surprisingly measurements in a wind tunnel at the firm’s Aerodynamic Test Centre have shown a Cd factor which is on a par with that of the BMW M3 Coupe.

The load area of the new M3 pickup features a removable Targa roof. Even with this roof on the kerb weight of the car which will be the world’s fastest pick up comes in at around 50kg lighter than the M3 convertible, and this can be reduced by another 20kg when the roof is removed, which also serves to lower the car’s centre of gravity for an even sportier drive.

But BMW have been careful to make sure that the race car performance and handling are also matched by impressive practical features. The new car is clad in high-grade structures aluminium sheeting and provides by far the biggest cargo capacity of any BMW car. It will also be the first BMW M car to feature a trailer tow hitch.
