To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the BMW Group’s ‘international cultural commitment’, a virtual video tour of the firm’s famous Art Car collection is to be made available on the internet.

BMW's Art Car Collection has been drawing on the talents of renowned artists from across the world since 1975, producing some truly unique vehicles. The idea behind the collection - to produce cars designed by famous artists - originally came from a French auctioneer and race car driver called Hervé Poulain, who commissioned American artist Alexander Calder to design his BMW racing car - the BMW 3.0 CSL - which took part in the 24 hour race at Le Mans.

Since then a total of 17 artists from 9 countries reaching across all 5 continents have contributed to the collection, producing a wide variety of saloons, coupes and roadsters. The latest addition was created by the internationally acclaimed artist Jeff Koons, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the collection in 2010. Commenting on his contribution Koons said that:

"These race cars are like life, they are powerful and there is a lot of energy. You can participate with it, add to it and let yourself transcend with its energy. There is a lot of power under that hood and I want to let my ideas transcend with the car - it's really to connect with that power."

The Art Car Collection has toured the world, appearing in many of the world's top museums over the years. But now it can be admired and enjoyed from the comfort of your own home with a film dedicated to each one of the 17 'works of art on wheels', in addition to a substantial gallery of photographs. To view the collection for yourself, go to bmw-artcartour.com.
