From November, BMW is offering a range of new engines across its 1 Series and 3 Series ranges.

Both models will be offered with a range of new efficient petrol and diesel units.

BMW 114d

The new 1 Series will for the first time be offered in 114d guise. Confusingly, the 114d gets a 1.6-litre turbocharged diesel engine developing 95bhp and 173lb-ft of torque. 0-62mph takes 12.2 seconds and the top speed is 115mph. CO2 emissions are just 112g/km and the combined cycle fuel consumption figure is 65.7mpg.

The 114d achieves these impressive figures thanks to the fitment of brake energy recuperation, start/stop, low rolling resistance tyres and an Optimum Shift Indicator which tells you when to change gear.

BMW has yet to reveal the pricing for the new 114d.

BMW 320i EfficientDynamics

The 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine in the new 320i is the most efficient petrol engine ever fitted to the 3 Series, returning 53.3mpg and emitting just 124g/km of CO2. Despite this, it develops 170bhp which is enough to get it from 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds.

BMW 316i

The baby of the 3 Series range also gets the 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine; however, in the 316i it produces just 136bhp. 0-62mph takes 8.9 seconds, top speed is 127mph and, weirdly, the 316i is less economical than the 320i, emitting 134g/km of CO2 and returning just 47.9mpg.

The 316i, however, will be the cheapest model in the 3 Series range, priced from just £22,850. It is also likely to be the most 'de-badged' model in the 3 Series range as owners opt to remove the embarrassing '316' insignia from the bootlid -- nobody likes admitting that they drive the cheapest model in the range.

BMW 320i Touring

The new 320i Touring gets a 2.0-litre petrol engine developing 184bhp which gets the car from 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 145mph. CO2 emissions are 152g/km and fuel consumption 60mpg. You can also fit an eight-speed automatic gearbox which lowers CO2 emissions but kills the fuel economy (145g/km, 45.6mpg).

BMW 316d Touring/BMW 318d Touring

Both models get a 2.0-litre diesel engine, which produces 116bhp in the 316d and 143bhp in the 318d. 0-62mph takes 11.2 seconds in the less powerful car and 9.2 seconds in the 318d, and both models emit 123g/km of CO2 and return 60.1mpg on the combined cycle.

Prices for the new 316d Touring start from £26,180, and from £28,280 for the 318d Touring.
