BMW has released the first pictures of its 3 Series Gran Turismo, ahead of the car's debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

The 3 Series GT is the third model to join the 3 Series range, following the saloon and the Touring estate models, and is the first all-new addition to the line-up since the 3 Series Compact came along in 1993.

According to BMW, the 3 GT combines the saloon's "dynamic, sporting genes with the practicality and versatility of the Touring."

Essentially, the 3 GT is a larger, more practical version of the standard 3 Series. The GT is bigger than the Touring in every dimension and there is evidence of this increase in size when you step inside. The wheelbase has been increased by 110m, giving an extra 70mm of rear legroom and boot capacity has also increased to 520-litres -- 25-litres more than the Touring. The boot is accessed via an electric tailgate and is illuminated with LED lighting.

Two diesel engines will be on offer from launch -- a 141bhp 2.0-litre 318d and a 181bhp 2.0-litre 320d -- and three petrol units will also be available -- a 181bhp 2.0-litre 320i, a 242bhp 2.0-litre 328i and a 302bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder 335i.

Standard equipment across the range include 17-inch alloy wheels, while the optional M Sport package adds 19-inch alloys and lowers the suspension by 10mm.

The BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo will go on sale in the UK in June, with prices starting from £28,830 for he entry-level 320i, rising to £38,470 for the range-topping 335i. This means that the 3 GT costs around £3,000 more than the standard 3 Series.
