With the onset of summer sunshine comes the increase in the number of British motorists heading across the channel for a driving holiday, but how prepared are you for the trip?
Road safety charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued a warning for continent-bound drivers to be prepared, as well as issuing some useful tips.
It is important to be aware of items which are not a mandatory requirement in the UK, but which you will need after crossing the channel. For example, in France it is a requirement to carry a breathalyser kit which meets NF standards, the French equivalent of BSI. A warning triangle and reflective jacket must also be carried at all times, and headlamps must be converted to French standards.
Some laws are more draconian in France, for instance an EU driving licence holder caught speeding by more than 40km/h will face having their licence confiscated on the spot. Drink driving limits are stricter too, 50mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood as opposed to 80mg in the UK.
Learn the speed limits for French roads, and remember that the limits change when it rains. Speed camera detectors, including satnavs with a speed camera detection facility, are illegal in France regardless as to whether they are in use.
IAM Chief Examiner Peter Rodger said: "Driving abroad can be very different to driving at home, but preparation as always is the key".
