Back seat drivers cause £9 million worth of damage to cars every year, a report from Confused.com has revealed.

The study has shown that 66% of motorists have had to deal with back-seat drivers and, shockingly, almost 1 in 4 motorists have had an accident whilst being distracted by passengers.

It seems that partners are the worst back-seat drivers with over 45% of them voicing complaints over the driver's performance. Those who drive for a living -- bus drivers, train drivers and delivery men -- are also likely to criticise the driver. Conversely, teachers are the most patient of passengers and are the least likely to complain.

The classic gestures of back-seat driving include gripping the door-handle, glancing at the speedometer and pushing an imaginary brake pedal.

To combat this issue, Confused.com has released a pamphlet on back seat driving etiquette.
