Audi has unveiled the five-door version of its new S3, the S3 Sportback, ahead of the car's debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month.
It's been a full five months since Audi revealed the standard S3 with which the Sportback shares its engine. The engine in question is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot which develops 296bhp -- 24bhp less than its chief rival, the BMW M135i.
A six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard but buyers can opt instead for a six-speed double-clutch S-Tronic transmission which comes as standard on the Quattro all-wheel-drive versions of the car.
With the S-Tronic gearbox fitted, the S3 Sportback completes the 0-62mph dash in five seconds -- half a second faster than the manual car. The fitment of the auto 'box also sees a slight improvement in fuel economy: 41mpg, compared to the 40.4mpg of the manual.
The S3 Sportback sits 25mm closer to the road than the standard A3 Sportback and is fitted with a tweaked version of the old S3's multi-link rear suspension. 18-inch alloys also come as standard, as do bigger, beefier brakes.
The Audi S3 Sportback is due to go on sale in the UK in September. Audi has yet to release any pricing information but expect the S3 to cost from around £34,000.
