Taking the power of eight-cylinder technology one step further Audi has announced that it will be launching the RS 4 version of its Audi Avant in late 2012.
Powered by the same V8 engine as the earlier RS 5 Coupe the Audi RS 4 Avant is expected to be available in the UK from September, and offers drivers superior all-wheel-drive handling and is capable of speeds up to an impressive 174mph.
Taking drivers from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.7 seconds the high-powered model combines a high spec hand-built 4,163 cc unit with ultra-efficiency - returning up to 25.7mpg according to the results of a combined cycle test.
The RS 4 also ensures that fuel is used economically and drivers can use the speedy dual-clutch transmission to shift automatically or change gears manually using the selector lever or the paddles on the steering wheel.
Quattro drive with crown-gear centre differential
Like other Audi RS models, the RS 4 Avant boasts quattro permanent all-wheel drive, which is further enhanced by the advanced crown-gear centre differential.
This innovative component will effortlessly adjust the distribution of power in the vehicle between the front and rear axles with up to 70 per cent flowing to the front or as much as 85 per cent to the rear. The result is your car handles both accurately and responsively.
The new speed-variable power steering system gives car owners the ability stay on course by making constant steering and surface grip adjustments according to different conditions.
High performance wave disc brakes
The inclusion of steel friction rings with their wave-like outer contour, connecting to the aluminum brake caps via pins, allows the model to minimise tensions and disperse heat to eliminate the chances of temperature peaks.
The latest Audi also has lightweight ceramic brakes that are hard-wearing enough to stand the test of time.
The Audi drive select driving dynamics comes as standard with the RS 4 Avant. The system gives drivers the ability to alternate between three modes – comfort, auto and dynamic – which varies the nature of steering, S tronic transmission and throttle response. Audi drive select can also adjust the sound of the exhaust system, double-declutching when downshifting in dynamic mode.
