A new Audi A1 1.4 TFSI 188bhp car with both turbocharging and supercharging will be available to order in the UK this week priced from £20,705.
The new top-performance A1 available from this week is able to deliver impressive performance through a combination of two forced induction methods - turbocharging and supercharging - which work sequentially.
The supercharger is the first of the two charging methods to kick in, coming into use at around 1,500rpm to boost the thrust. This then disengages at somewhere around 2,400rpm, and is followed at 3,500rpm by the turbocharger which gives a final boost to the car's thrust.
With its light but powerful four-valve-per-cylinder 'dual-charged' engine the new A1 is capable of acceleration from 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 141mph.
Due to the fact that the supercharger is designed to give boost at lower revs, Audi has been able to engineer the larger turbocharger with efficiency as the number one priority. Because of this Audi has managed to combine the strong performance of the new A1 with a good level of efficiency and cleanliness. The potential fuel economy of this car is an impressive 47.9mpg, and CO2 emissions come in at only 139g/km.
The standard transmission for the new car is an S tronic 7-speed twin-clutch gear box which performs gear shifts in only a few hundredths of a second, and its large seventh gear also serves to reduce fuel consumption even further.
Agile handling is ensured thanks to McPherson strut front and torsion-beam rear suspension, and the latest ESP stabilisation program with electronic axle differential lock which works by initiating very brief braking actions on the inside front wheel when sensors detect an impending loss of grip whilst cornering at speed.
That high performance S line suspension is one part of the overall S line specification package which comes as standard for the 1.4 TFSI 188bhp model. This also includes exclusive S line external styling with 17 inch alloy wheels, and part leather upholstery on sports seats. This is added to the Sport equipment level that includes remote central locking, air con, electric front windows and door mirrors, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity, Driver's Information System and an audio system with CD player and MP3 connectivity, 6 speakers, and a 6.5 inch retractable display.
