Audi has announced the price list for the forthcoming Audi RS 4 Avant.
The new RS 4 will be available only as a five-door estate -- a new RS 5 will fill in for the RS 4 saloon -- but we're not particularly fussed as, for our money, the estate is way cooler than the saloon and far less likely to be driven by a tailgating sales rep.
The good news is that the RS 4 keeps its predecessor's 4.2-litre V8, an engine which Jeremy Clarkson claimed was one of the best ever made. This means 444bhp and a 0-62mph time of 4.7 seconds which, you have to admit, is pretty impressive for a big estate car.
As is the norm with hot Audis, the RS 4 is fitted with the German firm's Quattro all-wheel-drive system, with 60% of the power going to the rear wheels; however, up to 70% of the engine's power can be sent to the front wheels and up to 85% to the rear (not at the same time, obviously) if conditions necessitate it.
All models are fitted with 19-inch alloys and huge high performance brakes as standard, and buyers also have the option of specifying Audi's Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) system. Audi goes into quite a lot of detail about this, but all you need to know is that it provides maximum stability through fast corners, so the RS 4 should be good to drive when the road gets twisty.
Of course, the RS 4 Avant would be useless were it not practical, and the car offers a huge 1,430-litres of storage space. It shouldn't be too expensive to run either, returning 26.4mpg on the combined cycle. Okay, so this is hardly Polo BlueMotion fuel economy, but for a big, powerful estate car like this, it's really not too bad at all.
The RS 4 Avant is available to order now, with prices starting from £54,925. The first cars will be delivered to customers in the autumn.
