The Mitsubishi ASX, released in the UK last year, has come through Euro NCAP testing with a 5-Star rating.

The crossover model received scores of 86% for adult occupant safety, 78% for child occupant safety, 71% for in-car safety assistance features, and 60% for pedestrian safety in tests conducted by the independent European consumer organisation.

The manufacturer attributes its overall 5-star rating, the highest overall rating attainable, to the structural design of the ASX, including octagonal-section side members and crush box structure which Mitsubishi say optimises energy absorption in the event of a collision. Elements of the Mitsubshi ASX's construction make use of high-tensile steel, which increases stiffness while reducing weight.

Features including double bulge crushable zones on the bonnet, plastic front wings, and energy absorbing front bumper, resulted in the 60% score for pedestrian safety, while behind the wheel the driver has a number of safety assistance systems at his or her disposal. These include active stability and traction controls, hill start assist, ABS with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, emergency stop signal system, and up to seven airbags.
