Aston Martin is recalling more than 17,000 cars after a Chinese sub-supplier was found to be using a counterfeit plastic material.
In all, 17,590 cars, including every left-hand drive model built since 2007 and all right-hand drive models built since May 2012, are being recalled. Around 75 per cent of vehicles built during that period are affected, with the exception of the Vanquish, which is not being recalled.
The company has found that one of its Chinese subcontractors, Shenzhen Kexiang Mould Tool Co Limited, which was supplying Aston Martin with accelerator pedal arms, was using counterfeit DuPont plastic material, supplied by Synthetic Plastic Raw Material Co Ltd of Dongguan.
According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the cars are being recalled because the accelerator pedal arm may break, increasing the risk of a crash.
Aston Martin has said that no accidents or injuries related to the issue have been reported.
The company is in the process of contacting the owners of affected models. A quick fix will be carried out for free at an Aston Martin main dealer, where a replacement part will be fitted in under an hour.
