Aston Martin has announced details of its new Cygnet city car which will be available in two special editions – White and Black - when it goes into production in April.

Aston Martin claims that the Cygnet is a “bespoke luxury car commuter car” and there is certainly some evidence of this luxury in the ‘White’ and ‘Black’ editions. The ‘White’ comes resplendent in white paint with hand-stitched seats in Pearl white leather, lashings of chrome and White Diamond turned alloy wheels. The ‘Black’ on the other hand is finished in ‘Magic Black’ metallic paint with seats hand-stitched in pure black leather featuring a unique diamond perforation pattern with plenty of dark chrome both inside and out. Buyers also get a five-piece luggage set courtesy of Bill Amberg, designed to match the car.

The new car will cost £30,995 which seems very good value for a bespoke Aston Martin with hand-stitched seats. However, when you factor in the small detail that the Cygnet is a rebadged Toyota iQ – a car that, incidentally, can be sitting on your driveway for a smidge over £10k – the Aston suddenly doesn’t seem such good value at all.

The Cygnet gets a 1.33-litre petrol engine, producing 97bhp and getting the baby Aston from 0-62mph in 11.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 106mph - hardly DB9 territory. However, it is the Cygnet’s performance credentials (or lack thereof) that are the key to its purpose. As of next year, strict EU regulations will dictate that all car manufacturers should conform to certain emissions regulations and the Cygnet is Aston Martin’s concession to this policy, lowering the marque’s average CO2 emissions.

The Cygnet’s price therefore is largely irrelevant – only the well-heeled will be buying the Cygnet. However, the prestige of the Aston Martin brand should ensure that the Cygnet flies off the dealers’ forecourts.
