Volkwagen’s Amarok pick up to be given its toughest test yet, with the news it is to make up the bulk of the Dakar Rally support fleet.
It has been announced that the Amarok is to make up over seventy-five percent of the almost forty strong fleet of support vehicles to be supplied by Volkswagen to the organisers of the 2012 Dakar Rally, which takes place next month.
The world famous event, which begins in Mar del Plata in Argentina on 15 January, will subject its support vehicles to some of the toughest and most extreme terrain on the planet. The course of over 5,500 miles is to run across the South American continent, from its starting point on the Atlantic coast to the Peruvian capital Lima, on the edge of the Pacific. Along the way it will traverse the Atacama Desert and Andes mountains.
Volkswagen have proven themselves highly capable in the rally proper, with an untouchable record in recent years. They are the reigning Dakar Rally champions, with Nasser Al-Attiyah emerging triumphant in this years event in January behind the wheel of a Volkswagen Race Touareg.
Never one’s to miss a publicity opportunity at the prestigious event, Volkswagen will use the race’s rest day to allow former Dakar Rally winner and F1 racer Jacky Ickx to put Scorpions guitarist Rudolf Schenker and former World Light Heavyweight boxing champion Daruisz Michalczewski through their off-roading paces in an Amarok pick-up.
