Alfa Romeo is celebrating the 60th birthday of its legendary Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 'Disco Volante' with a new 2013 edition of the car which has been designed and built by the Milanese coachbuilding firm Carrozzeria Touring.
The new Alfa Romeo Disco Volante is based on the existing Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione coupe and will be built only to demand in a very limited production run.
Fitted with the same 450bhp 4.7-litre V8 engine as the 8C Competizione, the Disco Volante will reach a top speed of 180mph and accelerate from 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds. The power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox and a limited-slip differential.
The design of the Disco Volante is inspired by the original 1952 car, and you'd have to say that it looks absolutely sensational. It takes 4,000 hours for the coachbuilders at Carrozzeria Touring to handcraft the Disco Volante's body which has been designed specifically to be 'insensitive to wind'. We think this is Italian for 'aerodynamic'.
On the inside, the Disco Volante has been given what Alfa calls a 'science fiction' feel thanks to red LED interior lights, aeronautical-inspired touches on the dashboard, instruments and controls and bespoke leather and alcantara upholstery. Buyers can also personalise their car's interior to match their exact preferences.
Unfortunately, Alfa Romeo has not confirmed how much the Disco Volante will cost; however, given the exclusivity of the car and the sheer number of man hours needed to build it, we'd expect it to cost significantly more than the £120,000 8C Competizione.
