Roads in the UK have deteriorated significantly over the winter, with 40 percent of road users claiming they are in a "terrible condition", the AA has found.

In a survey of just under 24,000 AA members, 40 per cent claimed that their local roads were in a terrible condition and 34 per cent of main roads are in a similar state. Conversely, just 11 per cent of drivers rated their local roads as being in excellent condition, with just 13 per cent claiming main roads are in a good state.

Unsurprisingly, claims for pothole-related damage to cars have risen five-fold since the beginning of 2014, with insurers taking an average of 173 claims per week.

This is despite recent announcements by the government that more money is to spent on repairing Britain's crumbling roads.

However, AA president Edmund King says this isn't enough. He said: "Government emergency handouts like those recently for pothole repairs are welcome but are a sticking plaster rather than a cure that will properly repair our roads for the future. We must ensure that our politicians recognise the crisis as we come up to local and general elections."
