The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV – what will soon be the company’s flagship electric off-roader – has been teased in the form of an uber-posh Maybach model that’ll be the top-of-the-range version.

The EQS and the posher Maybach model, will compete with everything from the BMW X7 to the Range Rover, Bentley Bentayga and the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Standard cars will look less glitzy than the Maybach – which features flash fixtures like a huge chrome grille, massive dished alloy wheels and a two-tone paint job – but you can still expect them to be deeply imposing.

Much will be the same on the inside. Mercedes-Benz’s Hyperscreen infotainment display will be the main talking point because it seemingly turns the whole dashboard into one massive screen. Actually, it’s composed of three separate displays housed under a single piece of glass.

You’ll operate it directly using the touchscreen or through Mercedes’ MBUX voice activation system that can understand, with scary accuracy, colloquial commands.

The Hyperscreen will be slotted into luxurious surroundings fit for a posh saloon. You’ll be able to choose from exposed metals and woods, carbon fibre and leather and the cabin will be lit up by glowing mood lighting at night.

One of the EQS’s biggest selling points will be its cavernous interior space, you can expect it to be significantly roomier inside than the smaller EQC SUV, with the likelihood that the EQS SUV will be offered as a seven seater. Keep the third row folded away and the boot will be massive, with plenty of room to swallow five people’s luggage.

With the seating capacity to carry seven people and the expectation that big SUVs should be effortlessly powerful, you can expect that the EQS SUV will not be short of horsepower.

It will be available with the same powertrain as the EQS 580 4Matic saloon that uses a front and rear motor to give it all-wheel drive and 523PS. That should be enough for acceleration of 0-62mph in around four seconds and a range of around 350 miles.

Exact pricing has yet to be revealed for the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV but expect it to be priced from around £100,000 when it goes on sale in spring 2022.
