Order books have opened for the Citroen AMI electric car meaning you can secure one with a £250 deposit. The car is expected to cost £6000 with first deliveries likely in spring.
The Citroen AMI is designed specifically for the city and is a rival to tiny EVs like the Renault Twizy. At 2.4m long and 1.39m wide, the AMI makes a Volkswagen Up (3.6m long and 1.64m wide) huge, so it’ll be a peach to park and the Citroen’s turning circle, which is 0.8m tighter than a black cab, makes it a dream to manoeuvre around town.
A top speed of 28mph means the AMI won’t be stretching far beyond the city limits, which is just as well because it has a 46-mile range. On the upside, it can be charged using a domestic three-prong plug in just 3 hours – a quarter of the time it would take most EVs.
Keeping the AMI relatively cheap was a priority and to save on production costs, the car uses the same bumpers front and rear and the same doors. It’ll also only be available in left-hand drive and the windows hinge open like on a classic 2CV.
Interior luxuries are limited to a phone dock and some luggage space, although you and your passenger sit side-by-side rather than straddling each other like you do in a Twizy.
Options are limited to a couple of styling packs. The My AMI Pop pack jazzes the exterior up with orange highlights and a roof spoiler, while the My AMI Vibe pack delivers a more mature theme of grey highlights and graphics.
We’ll have more information on the Citroen AMI – including a confirmed price – in the coming months.
