10 years after entering production, the two millionth MINI rolled off its Oxford production line with Prime Minister David Cameron behind the wheel, and is now up for grabs as a prize on Facebook.
The Prime Minister's visit to celebrate the landmark also included a guided tour of the plant to take in the new production facility already under construction in preparation for the next generation MINI. German owners BMW recently announced a £500 million investment in production facilities at the main Oxford plant, as well as the pressings plant at Swindon, and the engine facility at Hams Hall near Birmingham.
Over three-quarters of MINIs produced at Oxford over the past decade have been for the export market, with the finished vehicles being shipped to more than 90 countries across the globe. Last year the USA, Germany, France, China and Italy were the most popular export markets for the MINI. To keep up with demand, over the past decade the workforce at the Oxford plant has grown by 50%, and now churns out the MINI at a rate of up to 900 per day.
The two millionth MINI was finished in White Silver metallic with a blue denim roof, and the convertible is now to be given away as a prize on Facebook. The 'Two Million MINIs - Two Million Faces' page will be used to create a picture wall of two million MINI fans, with the winner of the two millionth MINI will be chosen at random after the competition ends on 30th September.
After stepping from behind the wheel of the two millionth MINI, Prime Minister David Cameron said, "BMW's continued investment in its UK operations is contributing to a real renaissance for the UK car industry", adding "It's a real privilege to drive this true British icon off the production line today. The 2 millionth MINI to be made here in Oxford is a fantastic symbol of the UK's strength in the global automotive industry and a great British manufacturing success story."
