Volvo C70 Overview
The first generation was available as either a coupé or a convertible whereas the second and current generation, has eliminated the option by just providing a 2-door coupé cabriolet with a retractable hardtop roof.
When riding with the roof down, boot space does become quite limited, not a problem if there is only one passenger, but would prove problematic when more passengers and luggage is thrown into the mix.
The engine choices are all more than adequate ranging from a 2.4L straight-5 to a 2.5L straight-5 Turbo charged petrol engine. There is also a 2.4 turbo diesel option.
Background
The Volvo C70 is a luxury coupe cabriolet which was introduced in 1997. It is often said to be the first Volvo to break out from its boxy, rectangular styling tradition which it was becoming known for. It was made in an attempt to create a convertible suitable for family who wanted a practical, comfortable, sensible car which remained stylish. Whether or not Volvo have achieved this is debatable.
In 2006 the second generation of the C70 was put into production. It has a retractable roof which is able to transform the C70 from a four-seater convertible to a sleek coupe in approximately 30 seconds. The car plays both roles well and delivers plenty of style.
The fact that it is a convertible does not jeopardise the standard of safety that Volvo is famous for is quite notable. It includes a generous and unique safety package and was named ‘Top Safety Pick’ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety after conducting crash tests on several convertibles.
In 2011 Volvo introduced a facelift which included a redesigned front end, new rear LED lamps and a new wider instrument panel. All other aspects remained pretty much the same.
Overview
It is not as flashy as your typical convertible and is quite pricey compared to other cars in its class, yet makes up for that with its original safety features. The car does seem somewhat more practical than many rival brands, and that will appeal to many clear headed buyers.
