The Skoda Rapid is an excellent medium family car. Practical, refined, economical and well-made, it's very hard to pick fault with the Rapid; however, we just can't help wishing it was a little more desirable.

Skoda Rapid Overview
The Skoda Rapid is a medium family car which fits into the Skoda range between the smaller Fabia and the larger Octavia. Despite looking like a saloon, the Rapid is actually a hatchback.
The Rapid is available with a choice of four petrol engines: a 74bhp 1.2, a turbocharged 1.2 with either 85bhp or 104bhp, and a 1.4 turbo with 120bhp. A 1.6-litre 104bhp diesel is also on offer.
Although not as much fun as a Ford Focus, or even a VW Golf, the Rapid is a relaxing car to drive; however, the suspension is a little too firm for British roads.
The Skoda's interior is a little basic; however, it is superbly screwed together and it both looks and feels classy and restrained.
There are three trim levels: S, SE and Elegance. All models come as standard with electric front windows, remote central locking and daytime running lights, while SE models get 15-inch alloys, Bluetooth and air-con. Elegance models get 16-inch alloys, front fog lights, electric windows all round and cruise control.
Background
The Skoda Rapid began life as a concept car called MissionL at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. It appeared in production form at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show and was launched later that year.
The Rapid is based on the same platform as the SEAT Toledo, the Audi A1 and the VW Polo.
Summary
The Rapid is a typical Skoda, which is by no means a criticism. Like most Skodas, the Rapid is a tiny bit dull and not quite as well-rounded as its VW-branded brothers; however, it's a capable and smart medium family car and it offers excellent value for money, making it a serious contender in this class.
