Background
The Mercedes SL-Class was first produced in 1954, initially as the Gullwing, and from 1957 as the Roadster. It sported a 4-speed manual transmission and a 3 litre engine.
The next generation debuted in 1963. It was available now with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission, as well as the original 4-speed manual transmission. The exterior was more stylish and there were changes inside the cabin.
The third generation Mercedes SL-Class, which was introduced in 1972, featured a redesigned exterior and a much wider range of engines available.
The Mercedes SL-Class was produced in its fourth generation from 1989. Once again the engine selection had been broadened, and the interior had been restyled with many extra features including automatic climate control, leather upholstery and new seating.
2003 saw the introduction of the fifth generation of the Mercedes SL-Class. This model sported a 7-speed automatic transmission. It was given a facelift in 2008.
The sixth generation of the SL-Class was unveiled in late 2011 and is the first all-aluminium Mercedes vehicle.
