The RS 4 Avant is one of those cars which seems to have all the bases covered. Not only is it blisteringly quick and a hoot to drive, but it's more practical than most family hatchbacks. When you f...
Audi RS4 Overview
The big news is that for the first time, the RS 4 is available as an estate (Avant) only. The old RS 4 saloon has been killed off to make way for the equally impressive RS5.
Under the bonnet you get a 4.2-litre V8 engine which develops an astonishing 444bhp and 317lb-ft of torque. This makes the RS 4 feel... er... fast. 60mph arrives in less than five seconds and flat out you'll be restrained by an EU-mandated 155mph top speed. However, if you spec the optional Sports pack, Audi will remove the limiter, allowing you to reach the RS 4's true top speed of 174mph.
To drive, the RS 4 is astonishing. Audi's Driver Select Package allows the driver to switch between comfort, automatic and dynamic settings. This means that the RS 4 is both a comfortable and cosseting long-distance cruiser and a sharp, engaging sports car.
With boot space of 490-litres with the rear seats up and 1,430-litres with the rear seats down, the RS 4 is extremely practical considering the amount of power on offer. Rear passenger space is a little limited but this is a small criticism.
Audi has a reputation for building some of the highest quality interiors in the world, and the RS 4 is no exception. The dashboard is well-made and has a sporty feel and the seats are both comfortable and supportive.
Background
The first RS 4 was introduced in 2000 and was based on the first-generation A4. It had a 2.7-litre V6 biturbo engine and was good for 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 162mph.
The second RS 4 came along in 2006 and was based on the third-gen A4. This model came with the 4.2-litre V8 fitted to the current car and could hit 62mph in 4.8 seconds. This time, however, the top speed was limited to 155mph.
The RS 4 is currently in its third generation and is based on the current Audi A4. It was unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show and went on sale in the UK in June 2012.
Summary
The RS 4 is truly one of the all-time greats. Practical, well-made and faster than many sports cars, there really is very little to criticise. It won't be cheap to run, but the RS 4 is one of the best all-round cars in the world.
